Meditation

Across All Cultures and Belief

Systems

Every Culture and Every religion, spiritual and belief system has a tradition of meditation. Whether it is called Prayer, Contemplation, Chanting, Singing, Dancing or Movement, or thinking about scripture, Philipians 4:8 - Joshua 1:8 - Psalms 1:2 - I would also suggest also refer to a mindful awareness of one’s relationship to God Phillipians 4:6 - Provers 3:7 - Psalms 72:15 - Do a search, find more reference!

What Meditation is

Intense focus on a thought or process. Many different types of meditation exist, Prayer is intense focus on Communing with the Divine. Dance is intense focus on ritualized movement. Breath Awareness Meditation is about training your brain to focus on one thing - your in breath and out breath. Thought Awareness Meditation and Zen Meditations are about learning from yourself about the path your thoughts tend to travel in, and learning to give yourself emotional space from your thoughts. Mantra Meditations are about thinking about one verse, one idea, one concept. These are often a component of Labyrinth Walks. Chanting like Gregorian Chants are another form of Mantra Meditations. Taoist Meditation is about finding balance between Yin and Yang and feeling the energy of the world around us. Mindfulness Meditation can include Walking, Sitting, or Doing an specific activity, being focused on what you are doing, and the experience of what you are doing in the now. For example Mindful Eating has been linked to weight loss and Mindfulness based addiction recovery programs have prove to be successful over the long term.

What Meditations is Not

Mindfulness is not clearing the mind. Clearing the mind is like falling asleep. Meditation is an active practice in which you are working to train your brain to pay attention.
